The Process
What’s it like to work with me?
The most basic element of therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. In therapy-speak, we call that the “therapeutic alliance.” My style is warm, empathetic, real, creative, irreverent (when appropriate) and compassionately direct. Past clients have expressed to me that they feel I am caring and non-judgmental.
When I have asked past clients to describe what working with me is like, their description that resonated the most for me was that I am a “compassionate bullshit-caller.” As your therapist, it is my job to be honest about what it is that I hear you saying. As a good therapist, it’s my job to be honest about what I hear you saying in a way that you can hear without feeling judged or overly defensive. That’s not to say that our work together will always be easy. At times it will be uncomfortable and at times it will be outright difficult. But you will not be doing this work alone; I will be your companion along the way while you are in my office, and I will help you learn skills and work on homework assignments to deepen those skills outside of therapy sessions.
My work is intuitive, and we will often talk about images, symbols or metaphors. I like to know what song lyrics or tv characters or favorite books are meaningful to my clients and find that references from pop culture often come up in sessions.
My therapy is LGBTQIA-positive, body positive, sex positive, and poly-knowledgeable.
